While the trees are getting bare the moss on rocks and trees makes up for the lack of color above. On Wednesday I took in many a patch of moss while walking with 3rd and 4th graders up to Kent’s Ledge above South Royalton. We were treated to a heron in flight over water, mushrooms growing in white scales along logs, and a clear overlook to the east where Lowry spotted our house before I did. It was high noon on our arrival at the overlook so the light was harsh. I liked the point of view looking back toward my house from the curved mountain top that I see every day as I eat my breakfast, or brush my teeth, or part the bedroom curtains. The overlook is on one of three sister hilltops I think resemble ocean waves.
